No student is unreachable. It takes a lot of energy to teach. Teaching makes you cry (for a lot of reasons). Some of your coworkers will complain. And if you aren’t reflecting on everything you’re doing, you’re not doing your job.
I hate when teachers say students are “unreachable.” That is not a real thing. If I can reach Christian Buresh and make him not hate me, then I can reach each and every single student that comes into my classroom. You just have to make the effort. If you aren’t willing to make the effort to do that, then don’t teach. Plain and simple.
Teaching makes you cry. Being a student learning how to teach makes you cry. Worrying that you won’t be a good teacher makes you cry. Watching videos of good teachers on Ellen makes you cry. I have a lot of crying in my future as well. I can already tell. Sometimes they will be happy tears, sometimes they will be sad tears, but every tear is worth it.
Teaching is hard and it takes a lot of energy. You have to be on your toes and be ready every day to come across struggles. You’re going to be tired, you’re going to think you are running out of timed that you won’t be able to cover every single thing you had planned for the year, but that is okay. You need to look at everything you have accomplished. There are so many ways to create and find energy, you just have to push through and do it.
Teaching takes a lot of energy so don’t hang out with negative teachers that drain that from you. Listening to someone complain all the time and be negative is so tiring. Stay away from those people, you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life. And if you can’t avoid them, find something else to talk about. Don’t let someone kill your vibe because they are a negative nancy.
And reflect on everything you do. Know what is working, know what isn’t and don’t be afraid to change. Do what you have to do for the betterment of your students.
