It’s Monday! What are you reading? 2/23/15 (it’s really Tuesday, but let’s pretend for a minute)

The book Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler is a great book for young kids that are trying to live through a divorce. Young Hudson is a figure skater and she is great at it. She has worked her way up to one of the best skaters around, but the night that she has a change to actuabittersweetlly go someone, she finds out that her dad and mom are getting divorced because of her father’s infidelity. She throws the skating competition and does not want to skate anymore. Through the book she tries to find herself again and reenter the skating world that has shunned her due to the loss of the competition. She works hard to get back into the world of skating and learns a lot about herself along the way.

I loved this book. It really helps kids realize that even when your parents are getting divorced, you cannot lose yourself along the way. I loved this and highly recommend it.

  1. Divorce is such a wide spread social issue for children now-a-days. Everyone has a friend, family member, or even themselves that have experienced divorce within their family. It’s good to see a book that targets that issue for teens.

  2. This book sort of sounds like the movie Stick It just with Ice Skating instead of Gymnastics. As someone who has gone through their parents divorcing, I wish there were books about this when I was going through it.
